Unfortunately, because of the Corona Virus, our world has changed drastically in such a short period of time. I often find that music is a great healer, so with that I've compile the Top 20 songs to listen to while we are riding out this Corona Virus outbreak.
These songs are not to take away anything from the seriousness of what the world is going through. They are to slightly lighten the mood so that we may temporarily have some peace of mind while we wait for a cure. One day soon, our world will prevail. When that day comes, we all will have a greater appreciation of our freedoms & our health.
20) Alice Cooper "Schools Out"
Parents across the country now know. School is out! Yes, EVEN in New York City. With all the kids home, it's a new world and they will all be able to take advantage of numerous new remote learning opportunities.
19) Iron Maiden "Run to the Hills"
When THE Bruce Dickerson is not asking for more cowbell, he seems to be telling us the Corona Virus is coming and we need to "Run to the Hills, Run for your lives". Perhaps we all should listen.
18) Georgia Satellites "Keep Your Hands to Yourself"
In every store I visited these past few days, you can see the expression in every passer-by and every clerk. They clearly are thinking "Keep your hands to yourself"
17) Thompson Twins “Doctor Doctor”
As a child of the 80's, the Thompson Twins call for "Doctor, Doctor" has been a constant earworm that won't leave my head. Warning, after you listen to this song, it probably won't leave your head either. I'd also like to thank all those Doctors, Healthcare providers, Emergency Workers and others all on the front line trying to make our world a better place.
16) Godsmack “Keep Away”
When Sully says it, we listen. Never misunderstand him, Keep Away! Needless to say, this Godsmack song should be played at a very loud volume. Enjoy it like I do.
15) Black Crowes "Remedy"
People around the globe all want the same thing as Chris Robinson when he belts out "I need a remedy!" We need a remedy for this virus, a remedy for the global economic infrastructure, and a remedy to heal our planet. Keep telling them Chris.
14) Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush “Don't give up”
With the heart-breaking news we are hearing from China, Italy, and families across 145+ other countries, this incredibly beautiful song reminds us to keep our hope alive and "Don't Give Up". I recommend listening to this song every day.
13) Metallica “Blackened”
There actually were way too many Metallica songs to choose from like Harvester of Sorrow, Fade to Black, Seek & Destroy, For Whom the Bell Tolls and more. However the lyrics of Blackened mostly symbolically represent a description of this new Corona Virus world. This is by far the darkest song on my list, and with Metallica's thrash metal talent it is definitely the hardest song too.
12) Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter”
How could the Rolling Stones not make the list. Especially for one of the best songs ever. If you are healthy and not working in an essential job, the most important thing on your mind should be Gimme Shelter.
11) John Mellencamp “Crumblin' Down”
John Mellencamp once told us he fought Authority and Authority always won. Now in a world of closures, bans, and craziness so comes true his prediction of the Walls crumblin down. I am, of course hopeful we will build them back once again over time.
10) Genesis "Land of Confusion"
Either globally, domestically or locally, one thing is constant. There is much confusion everywhere. I read somewhere that while you are watching this video, the message is still the same, it's just with different puppets today. Here's to everyone finally getting organizing and being smart.
9) Peggy Lee “Fever”
Corona Virus has brought fever to thousands. Peggy Lee's cover of this song is over 60 years old and is high on our list. It's quite timeless.
8) Tom Petty “Don’t Come Around Here No more”
As people flock to their houses to be in quarantine or to practice Social Distancing, many of us are simply being told "Don't come around here no more." Let's remember the reason for this message is to be safe so just take Tom Petty's advice.
7) Foreigner “Urgent”
Politicians, businesses, emergency workers, and individuals across the globe are feeling the heat! The world needs help and answers now. Foreigner says it best. "It's Urgent!"
6) Billy Idol “Dancing with Myself”
Billy Idol's song will now be the anthem for millions staying home. At least until they can go back out into the world.
5) Disturbed “Down with the Sickness” (Warning: Explicit language)
Ooh, ah, ah, ah, ah! This is probably the most popular song of my very favorite band. I am sure the last thing Disturbed ever thought was that the 20th anniversary of Down with the Sickness there would be a world-wide disease spreading. Still not letting these events deter from the band's consistent positive messages of enduring & surviving along with their reminders of "We are not alone" when fighting whatever demons we are facing.
4) The Police “Don't Stand So Close to Me”
Take a trip to any store these past days and we often forget to remember our current reality is we MUST stay a few feet from each other. Wonder how many people are quoting to others "Don't stand so close to me." Ironically enough, in NYC and other areas, that message will soon be coming from the actual police in the days to come.
3) Beatles “Help”
Released 55 years ago, "HELP" is now today's war cry of millions of people across the world. More fitting is that its comes from possible the greatest rock band talent of all time.
2) Bob Marley “Don’t Worry About a Thing”
With all the violence, drama and turmoil he had to endure during his life, I am quite sure Bob Marley didn't really think there was nothing to worry about. However, when we are listening to this song we can at least transport out minds to a place taking some comfort that "everything" will be alright.
1) REM “End of the World”
Probably the most appropriate song of the list down to the very lyrics "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine". From now on we live in a new world. Let's not forget that. As always, people will adapt and learn how to move on. After we finally beat this virus, hopefully they everyone will also be more respectful & appreciative of what we have along the way.
So did you agree with my list? Reach out and let me know. In the meantime, remember we will beat this. Stay Strong, be good & be safe.
